Beacons Program Assistant

Location: Beacons/Girls & Youth
Hours: At least once per week for one hour between the hours of 3:45-5:15pm, Monday through Thursday.

Description:
Summary: Ranging from 1st through 8th grades this volunteer position will provide a positive role model for participants at the YWCA Beacon Program. This individual should posses general tutoring skills and be able to “lend a hand” in a variety of situations.

Outline of Volunteer’s Responsibilities/Tasks:
Primary Duties:
Assist students with homework completion, help prepare students
For state MCA test, guide students to focus their attention on
Lesson being taught for the day by instructor, demonstrate and
Promote positive work habits (i.e. cooperation, perseverance,
Self-motivation, responsibilities etc…

Other duties:
Assist at snack time, engage in enrichment opportunities, being visible at dismissal as needed, keep a positive attitude, talk to students if you see they might be having a bad day, other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Applicant must have a familiarity with urban youth and/or knowledge of youth work and development. Previous youth work or volunteer experience is preferred. You must be at least 18 years old.

Training/Supervision/Reporting: Upon being selected to start your volunteer opportunity you will receive a tour of the facility. You’ll have a chance to meet staff and get a feel for the environment you’ll be working in. Signing in daily upon arrival and reporting to the volunteer coordinator will be required.

Commitment: YWCA Beacon Program operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm. Volunteer must be able to commit to minimum one time a week for 1 hour a day between the hours of 3:45-5:15pm.

Outcome/Goals: Our goal here at the Beacon program is to encourage academic success, youth leadership, provide service-learning opportunities and family support. If we can support young people in one or all of these areas our communities and the young people who live in it will have a chance at a bight future.

Benefits: Watching a light being turned on inside young person due to your interactions with them. Supporting a school system that has tremendous odds working against them and knowing your time and commitment has changed one young person’s outlook on education and possibly their life.
